Erin K. Chiou, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Human Systems Engineering

I am an Associate Professor of Human Systems Engineering and the Director of the Automation Design Advancing People and Technology (ADAPT) Laboratory. In addition to my faculty role at Arizona State University, I am also an affiliate of the Center for Human, AI, and Robot Teaming (CHART). I recently served on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine consensus study committee that produced a report on Human-AI Teaming: State-of-the-Art and Research Needs for the 711th Human Performance Wing of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Panel on Human Factors Science at the Army Research Laboratory, and as the Diversity Committee Chair for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of which I am still currently a member. I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making and an Editorial Board member for the Human-Machine Communication journal.

I received my Ph.D. and M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a concentration in Human Factors and Ergonomics and minor in Health Systems. Prior to graduate school, I worked in various industries, including with smart medical devices, and at an international education startup company. I received my B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
